The lack of ethics that seems so prevelant today is a concern. Ethics is a cornerstone of both leadership and sustainability. An ethical approach builds trust and belief in leaders. The consequences of socially irresponsible behavior can be devasting to all stakeholders, particularly employees and shareholders.

For organizations to provide value to clients, leaders must be accountable to society. These ideas are not separate but intertwined. Organizations provide a service and leaders create cultures that make it possible. As Bill Hewlett was known to say: people want to do a good job, and if we provide them with the right tools and the right environment, they will. The right environment is a culture where people feel safe to explore. Part of creating such an environment is ethical leadership. Business is about profits and growth, to be sure, but how you get there is just as important.
